چکیده

We study the parameterized complexity of dominating sets in geometric intersection graphs. In one dimension, we investigate intersection graphs induced by translates of a fixed pattern Q that consists of a finite number of intervals and a finite number of isolated points. We prove that Dominating Set on such intersection graphs is polynomially solvable whenever Q contains at least one interval, and whenever Q contains no intervals and for any two point pairs in Q the distance ratio is rational. The remaining case where Q contains no intervals but does contain an irrational distance ratio is shown to be NPcomplete and contained in FPT (when parameterized by the solution size). In two and higher dimensions, we prove that Dominating Set is contained in W[1] for intersection graphs of semi-algebraic sets with constant description complexity. This generalizes known results from the literature. Finally, we establish W[1]-hardness for a large class of intersection graphs.

Domination in Geometric Intersection Graphs

For intersection graphs of disks and other fat objects, polynomial-time approximation schemes are known for the independent set and vertex cover problems, but the existing techniques were not able to deal with the dominating set problem except in the special case of unit-size objects. We present approximation algorithms and inapproximability results that shed new light on the approximability of...

A PTAS for the Minimum Dominating Set Problem in Unit Disk Graphs

We present a polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS) for the minimum dominating set problem in unit disk graphs. In contrast to previously known approximation schemes for the minimum dominating set problem on unit disk graphs, our approach does not assume a geometric representation of the vertices (specifying the positions of the disks in the plane) to be given as part of the input. The alg...

Parameterized Complexity of Independence and Domination on Geometric Graphs

We investigate the parameterized complexity of Maximum Independent Set and Dominating Set restricted to certain geometric graphs. We show that Dominating Set is W[1]-hard for the intersection graphs of unit squares, unit disks, and line segments. For Maximum Independent Set, we show that the problem is W[1]-complete for unit segments, but fixed-parameter tractable if the segments are axis-paral...

Framework for ETH-tight Algorithms and Lower Bounds in Geometric Intersection Graphs

We give an algorithmic and lower-bound framework that facilitates the construction of subexponential algorithms and matching conditional complexity bounds. It can be applied to a wide range of geometric intersection graphs (intersections of similarly sized fat objects), yielding algorithms with running time 2 1−1/d) for any fixed dimension d ≥ 2 for many well known graph problems, including Ind...

Complexity and approximation ratio of semitotal domination in graphs

A set $S subseteq V(G)$ is a semitotal dominating set of a graph $G$ if it is a dominating set of $G$ andevery vertex in $S$ is within distance 2 of another vertex of $S$. Thesemitotal domination number $gamma_{t2}(G)$ is the minimumcardinality of a semitotal dominating set of $G$.We show that the semitotal domination problem isAPX-complete for bounded-degree graphs, and the semitotal dominatio...
